Helfa Gelf

HG_RD&AW_A5.inddHelfa Gelf is almost upon us. This is my maiden voyage into an event i have supported for a long time. I feel as I have grown as an artist Helfa Gelf, each year has cultivated me into new sprouts of direction and appreciation. I have covered all the counties the event covers Denbighshire, Flintshire, Conwy and Gwynedd seeing many skills and disciplines. So with all this in mind I feel its my duty to deliver something different over the 4 Saturdays I will doing. This gave me the great opportunity to work alongside Ronan Devlin in collaborative venture ‘One Year On’. His knowledge and guidance have been a necessity to me. Its been 1 year since we met Via chance email through Ffoto Alternative (it seems a lot longer) We have decided to show work over the past year which approached from different angles but links between both our practices is uncanny. This culminates in us producing a series of screen prints which is a new practice to us both. Anyway enough of this I don’t want to spoil the surprise. If your taking part good luck! If not come along and see us…

North and South of Keith Arnatt

So in the last few weeks I have been lucky enough to see two Keith Arnatt exhibitions. One at Oriel Mostyn…

Keith-Arnatt2

and the other at Tate Britain.

A.O.N.B. (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) 1982-4 by Keith Arnatt 1930-2008

As you can imagine both at different ends of the spectrum on scale, yet punching at the same weight. The North end of Arnatt’s work is some 10 to 12 images of post-market and typically British rubbish in the Mostyn. The South (Tate Britain) represents a retrospective of Keith Arnatt’s work, not only this but it is placed in the context of the History of British Art show that the gallery is running.

Keith Arnatt quote

The above statement taken from the Tate Britain highlights our constant obsession to document everything on a phone rather than enjoy the moment for yourself. I recently saw on T.V someone on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury with Nile Rodgers with is face stuck in his i-pad filming. What would Keith have done? Enjoy the moment look around, that is why we are fitted with memories!

I was introduced to Arnatt at an early age in my creative journey. It was like the fear going to High School then finding out your older second cousin went there to protect and everything would be ok. I think I am like Arnatt, inspired by the Mundane, feelings of ‘the big tourist attraction is on the right, what happens if I take a picture to the left?’ The scale of both shows is inconsequential, they both deliver a Heinrich Manoeuvre to the senses.

Arnatt’s place in the Tate is along with Richard Long is a tip of the hat to arts based photographers, from Arnatt’s images of dogs, decaying food produce or post it notes. His process was a struggle but the continued commitment to art gave it foundation and strength. The boxes work in Oriel Mostyn is refined in scale but still solid in impact, touched again with Arnatts melancholic chic. For me the sadness created by the boxes is metaphorical in maybe what he was trying to the say. What are we like?

This gallery in milazzo castle will take some beating.

I went to the library its was very different to england it was almost like a museum I didn’t see the new Mills and Boon by the front door. Beautiful marble staircase

I walked to the store yesterday done the back lane totally out in the fields and every so often there would be a strong smell of cannabis like its growing wild. There missing a trick if it is 🙂

Got a good solid collection of pil boxes i think ive got 12 or 13 images to project in the vault of the castle.

We are told we will get a tour of parts of the castle not open to the public. Watch out tony Robinson and time team

Morning

Seems to be cool and overcast today. Its difficult carrying all your stuff around in the heat of the day but provides some good results

Found some new pil boxes yesterday which was great 3 new as well.

I projected pictures of the Great Orme on the side of the barn last night in Milazzo it produced lovely texture with the  Stone Walls.

Got into to Milazzo and soft lad had forgotten his memory card so we had to venture on the local bus. The funny thing was Allie asked “were was the bus”? to which they replied “there are no buses“.  definitely lost in translation unless they thought we ment open top tour bus 🙂 It reminded me of Prague when i asked the taxi driver how you would great someone  with say ” how do you do” the taxi driver replied we do not say that we are not interested”

Off to look at the castle today and then im going to Catania (maybe)

Ciao

Still sat under the same tree strangely it’s called a word press tree 😉

Settled in well yesterday even if i had phone my data roaming on for a bit 😦

Chatted lots with Allie she is an artist from chicago she cool although my dull sit Widnesian tones confuse sometimes.

Actually sat in the sun yesterday which was novel for me. I ve got a watch now so i must get a tan.

Recreated a clash song today ‘i got lost in supermarket’ even Allie said it was bigger than anything she had seen in the states. Then the fun began. I got to the till with the apples i had bought. I didn’t realise you had put your own code on from a register. So pulling that dum english face we have all pulled due to losing it in translation the kind lady swiftly behind me in the que whisked my apples off to bar code them for me. Scusi 🙂

We went to the village restaurant last night. It was great even if the manager of the gaff did come over and shake my hand. He tried to get me to pay for all the bill 🙂

Found this for my dad. Peroni beer
