I was asked to respond to some of the history of Tedder House in Llandudno for Ideas People Places, working alongside Marc Rees, Lisa Carter and Helfa Gelf. Now standing empty stripped back to the bare bricks, all the that remains of the old R.A.F.A Club are stories and a few artefacts amongst the surviving members. After meeting with several people who were involved with the old club I was able to piece together a few memories and bring some of this once great town instution back to life. The work was projected onto a trophy cabinet from the old club on the opening night, and club members were invited to see it, there will be another opportunity to see the film in September during Helfa Gelf.
I found this packet addressed to my Granddad‘s house in Hough Green, Widnes in the loft at my Mum and Dad’s, it contained a 16mm cine film. It did not look like it had ever been viewed, it is the perfect time capsule. I’m not sure who is filming, I guess it is him but at one point he disappears into the dark of the evening light on his motorbike, which I think is fitting like a memory. These images only hold reference to key points in a relationship. Sadly my Grandma is not on the film. I don’t think she will have been filming it either. It’s also great to see my dad with a great flock of hair, he reminds me of Willie the Scottish caretaker out the Simpsons.
Anyway enough of me guiding your views. make your own ideas about it.
Having blogged for sometime i’m still not sure I really get it.

Well enough of all that yesterday I went to the quarry above llanfairfechan in Conwy north Wales. I didn’t rock my world but it got my head and eyes working. Over christmas went to a forestry commission log cabin. This is where I can pin point the old cogs
I thought of some words of how I was feeling while there. So yesterday I did some filming on the top of the hill. I also took some pictures with a real camera (well digital) so these are in production to make a little video with some words…
Again more adventures into moving image. I like this it has a real dirty feel to it. It makes me feel like the journey back from something that may have regretted doing. I think the music rumbles along really well with it. As ever let me know what you think, feel, dislike…

On Wednesday I go via my favorite form of public Transport (the Train) to Hereford. Now other than cows and a late goal by Ronnie Radford in the 1972 FA Cup at Home to Newcastle. I know little of the place. I have missed The Hereford Photographic exhibition over the past few years as I have been at Paris Photo. On seeing that John Bulmer was one of the attractions this year I decided to drag my grumpy soul to see his work in the flesh. I have looked at his body of work in Manchester.
Robert Adams writes in Why people Photograph ” At our best and most Fortunate we make pictures because of what stands in front of the Camera, to honor what is more greater or interesting than we are. We never accomplish this perfectly though in return we are given something perfect- a sense of inclusion. Our subject thus redefines us and is part of the biography by which we want to be known”.
John Bulmer he was around the same time as Don McCullin. He was famed for his colour slide work a pioneer of that time for using the medium of colour. If the newspapers need something document they would either get Bulmer or McCullin. John Bulmer really catches the change in Brittain with many areas still pulling them self from the legacy of the second world war.
Despite the bleakness of this image I still feel it has a positive direction to it. The man in the image we do not where he is going or has been. The mist that shrouds the image. The large empty space the gentleman walks through could be the same route he has taken to a family’s house or work for years. Refusing to use the modern modes of transport. However it touches on a post apocalyptic feel
Changing the image to black and white alters the feel and the impact the photo posses. It seem to flatten the picture with less impact
This maybe the other direction on the same street as the previous image. We feel the pub is the only business that can survive in the area. the Broadway sign on the pub makes draws on the importance of the name of the theatre area in New York. This the Northern Broadway where the pub is the pivot point of society. The Cobbled streets show use detail of the age of the area and a possible clue as to why the homes have been removed due to the old age. The street with the two young boys in leads you in to the mist and the unknown of the what lies ahead. With prospects not being clear for the future of the area.
So much information in this picture. I see it first as being a metaphor of empty space. The old man is detached from the area he is on he is no longer connected to any of the signs in the image. At one time he may have been a jeweller. The number makes you think of age and at 21 the old man may have been involved with sport. The way his foot is raised it make me think that he could have been a footballer. Maybe the football image comes from the fact we only its location on hand as Manchester to deal with. The way the foot point at the entrance makes you intrigued at to what is going on outside of the composition on the image. the old man being dressed in gray sat on the bin is a negative slant of the image. Although the sign age dated with modern-day standards this was probably a well to do area. although we do depict it as being on the edge of city industrial area.
This image again I see as depicting an empty space that all the young people have to live off and express themselves with in the area is given before us in the image. The blue and white image makes you think you are in area close to the Manchester city ground. The images take on the modern feel of lowery’s work
The similarities of the picture are uncanny. The people have almost the same stance
John Bulmer use of space to capture economic isolation in his series of images in Manchester is a powerful Body of work. I have found them really empowering to look. It makes me feel that what I’m doing is right. As I commented his use of colour slide film adds a real grit to the work. Almost like these are the real colours off life and it was that grim. Excellent document of a forgotten less complicated period in time.
The Robert Adams quote shows that Bulmer without displaying his local Knowledge has a connection to the area. Maybe as a child the matched identical street where faceless to him. Now he sees it being of interest to the masses

Everyone headed the warning and arrived early for our first appointment at Molinare. I think myself like the rest of the group was nervous on going into the first company. We met Mike McMahon who was a former student at Glyndwr University several years ago. He was very friendly and went round the group asking what we were interested in. He then introduced us to Mark Foligno the Managing director of the company. He was very relaxed in his approach to our group. Asking us where we were from and our intention of the trip. He was talking to this guy who turned out to be Paul Andrew Williams the Director of London To Brighton. He said, “ As students forget all the rules”. This really put everyone at ease and set the tone for the rest of the visit.
The company deals in Post Prediction the flow of work is the film is finished its then edited goes to the audio team then to the pictures team. This is called grading, which means setting the continuity of the film. The scene we was show was a film called hawk. Which was being filmed in Wales. It had two shots of a mouse and the man looking for the mouse in grass. Both shots were filmed 6 months apart. This gave a totally different lighting. The scene with the mouse is called a pick up as it was filmed after the event off the location. We was also showed
So they split up the picture and the sound. The (rushes) images are then scanned in conformed (in order). Then if any text needs to be added it’s put in after all the process. The film is then. The film is digital film is then scanned back to 35mm film using a northern light scanner which scans at 2k. It is then run through an Arri Laser which creates the master negative.
In the Foley suite they add the sound fx to the film. I found this the best part, as it was so simple. On the floor they had every type of surface you could image. These were used for recording footsteps on there was brick, laminate, wood, soil, metal, concrete and tiles. There was also a big bag of she’s for whatever the screen requires. All the info they need to create a sound is on a screen. They normally have one week to record the sound and one week to fit it to picture.
Once the sound is completed Dolby are called in this cost £5000 whoever the company is in the world. Some of The films they have worked on are :Hawk, Dammed United, Dead Man Runs, Moon, Everybody’s fine and London To Brighton.
Above is a recent pice of work that i have done for a friends 3oth. I’m really pleased with it as its scanned off HP5 film. it also fit in with the Wrexham in bloom brief. As im getting text to work with images. aswell as it look realistic.
I had a few brain waves since my last post and im starting to feel positive about my work (i think). I’ve chosen to do the film direction which i think is brave but considered. So watch this space. I feel by this im really pushing myself which often brings the best out in me.
