i had a clear view of how I wanted the work to look by filling the wall as you walk into the space capturing the shear volume of the signs in the area

I think I captured all the signs there was just under 40 which coming up with the idea even I was shocked about

Trefnant Sign

I think the tow signs i’ve shown here are the news and oldest that i found. The above sign Pre date the standardisation of British Road Signs by the Worboys Committee of 1963.

I grew up in an industrial northern town. In the 1980s the industry left…

British industry underwent a period of turbulent change during the 1980s

as a result of new government policies.  The Thatcher administration then

advanced the concept of ‘The Industrial Estate’, which became an out

of town regeneration scheme that every town wanted.

As an island, there is only so much small industry our infrastructure can support.

Often when an area receives European funding, it is designated as an

inhabitable Brownfield Site renovation scheme. Such official terminology

can be perceived as disingenuous and becomes a metaphor for deprivation.

I aim to document the junctions and roads of the areas where the jobs never came.

As I have previously mentioned I went to the quarry in North Wales. this was one of the themes I was thinking about while I was up there. the building look over 100 years old. it’s at the end of a track at the back of Llanfafirfechan but actually entrance to the modern quarry is from Penmaenmawr. It felt strange up there. I would not sat ghostly but unloved. Walking time has had little influence on the grass path ways. I really liked the views of anglesey from up there. It was nice to see the Great Orme in Llandudno and puffin island off pen mon in detail rather than speeding past them out of a window on the A55 on a train or in a car. One of Conwy little gems just off the Welsh coastal path

So er yes I actually went out with a real camera (Canon 7d digital camera) rather than my Samsung S3 Phone and Instagram  and took some pictures. its been a while but it was fun all the same. I went over to the island of Ynys Mon in Wales and the Britannia bridge that carries the A55. The main trunk road to Ireland from Holyhead. I also got inspired by rocks there was a church in the middle of the irish sea near aberffraw called St Cwyfan Church . You can get to it at low tide.

 

I got some pictures of the stone lions that you can’t see from the road after the old Thomas Telford railway tunnel was burnt down in the 1970s and they put the new road on top. I love the steel structure and the rivets and bolts holding the bridge up

Grid Iron 2


Grid Iron 2 is my second collection of metal grills and vent covers. Its funny  im getting some really funny looks off people as I lean to the floor camera in hand seemingly taking a picture of nothing. Ha I hear you cry! Little do they know? This work is from Conwy, Hereford and Abergele.

He chooses the vastness of space inhabited by the powerful elements of nature and the contradictory ones of culture to operate in two directions. On the one hand, the evocation of emotional states through the photographic rendering of a space-light that is alive, almost metaphysical, and recalls the symbolisation of the forces of nature in Turner. On the other, a crystal-clear gaze that sounds the material aspects of the contemporary landscape which is tied to the development of the productive activities and concrete structuring of the world through the molding power of economy and property.”

John will be talking about his work from the past 30 years, both colour and black and white, digital and slide.

I went to the audience with John Davies in Liverpool. I found the night to be really positive and welcoming. I made some excellent contacts. I spoke to Karen Newman who has just been appointed curator of the gallery. I hope to send her a follow-up email after my meeting. I also spoke to john Davies in some depth about his work. The main thing I was interested in finding out was the main drive he had in stepping into the world of Photography. The interesting point about was this was he described his home life and the work of turner as his biggest influence. For me to see his early 1980s work on slide projector was a magic moment

Although he shows spaces that have people in them. I still feel his works contacts with mine and a big influence can be taken from. It was interesting to hear john talking about how he use film and digital side by side. Id say he one of the first traditionalist image makers I have heard say that.

John talked about how sad it that so much public space has been sold off by council to private investors. He commented on the massive development at chavas park which is Liverpool 1 shopping centre. I’m not sure I totally agreed with what he was saying. I see that area although belonging to the people as glorified wasteland

Follow the above link to see all the images from Cabby Dave. The images are taken in and around London in the Barbican Area. They have a real sense of honesty. If unknowing of dates of the images they could be from any time period. Even more so with the black and white images. They make me think of work be people like Paul Trevor. You get a real sense of the old and the new with the buildings and regeneration on browsing thought the images . I really like the fact the Photos are all taken from the same level. On further investigation you see they are taken from the window of the drivers taxi. The images may to some lack slightly on composition but make up for this with fact they are relevant and original. As well as the factor of working in the constraints of a London Cab A very special peace of work
